All Summer Scholars will read four classic works of African and African-American history and literature that address the main themes of the seminar and which we will discuss in-depth during the seminar. These core texts are:
Things Fall Apart
by Achebe, Chinua.
(London: Heinemann, 1958.)
Heart of Darkness
by Joseph Conrad
(Harper & Bros., 1902.)
The Souls of Black Folk
by W.E.B. Dubois
(Chicago: A.C. McClurg & Co., 1903.)
by Richard Wright
(New York: Harper & Bros., 1940.)
Summer Scholars will be asked to procure their own copies of Dubois and Wright (any edition) and to read them ahead of the seminar. Copies of Conrad and Achebe will be given to Summer Scholars on arrival to be read during the seminar and discussed in the final week.
A packet of primary sources and key secondary articles will also be provided to Summer Scholars on arrival at the seminar.
